Watch for Scattered Storms Tonight Cooler Weekend As Heat Breaks
Areas west of NYC are under Flash Flood Watches for obvious reasons. Long Island and NYC are not under flash flood watches as much of the thunderstorm activity this evening and tonight will be to our west and southwest. That doesn’t mean that Long Island is completely in the clear because the risk for scattered showers or a thunderstorm will be there through tonight but I think that the chances here are lower. Go ahead with evening plans but be a little cautious and keep an eye on the radar. It is a hot humid afternoon with highs reaching into the 90s inland but we are getting a break from the heat this weekend.
SATELLITE
We are beginning to see scattered thunderstorms pop up on the radar and they will get a bit more numerous this evening but clusters will set up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and weaken as they reach the coast. Other than the scattered shower or thunderstorm this evening or later tonight when a cold front passes, we should be okay for the most part.
WEATHER RADAR
The passing cold front will drop southward into Southern New Jersey or Delaware as a high builds into New England. This will put us in a northeast wind Saturday and Sunday. Look for cloudy to occasionally partly sunny skies Saturday and Sunday. It won’t be a perfect weekend and yes there could be a shower or downpour on either day, but on the whole it will be on the dry side. The northeast wind will keep temperatures in the 70s to near 80 for highs on both weekend days.
The standout on the latest GFS loop for the weekend and next week is Ida which will likely become a hurricane very soon. It is forecast to become a major hurricane and is targeting a landfall in Louisiana late Sunday or Sunday night.
The remaining low and moisture will eventually head here producing soaking rain beginning early Wednesday and lasting into early Thursday morning. It could be another significant rainfall for our area but it will be followed by a shot of dry and cool air for the end of next week which then leads into the Labor Day holiday weekend. Autumn could be in the air!
