Winter Weather Advisory Long Island Thursday Into Friday

6 Inches Or More Total Snowfall

Winter Weather Advisory is posted for Long Island as our 5th snow system of the season gets underway. This is going to be another one of these systems that will spread over 2 days. When it is all said and done, snow accumulations on Long Island will reach 6 inches in most places. Some spots will get a little more. Over Eastern Long Island we will see lower amounts on the order of 4 to 6 inches as some sleet or a little rain could mix in at some point tomorrow night.

Ahead of all this it was a nice cold day with a gusty wind with sunshine though highs only barely made it back to 30. Clouds are already lining up to the west and southwest. They will be increasing tonight. Meanwhile the low level flow of cold air from the north will continue overnight. Lows by morning will be in the upper teens and lower 20s.

Radars are quiet but look for snow to start to appear later tonight on both regional radars. Snow should be on the doorstep of Long Island shortly after daybreak and then overspread Long Island during the morning hours.

You can expect the snow to become heavy at times from late morning until late afternoon or early evening. Bands of heavy snow will set up and this should put down 4 or so inches (perhaps some spots a bit more) in that time frame. After that we will see snow (or perhaps a little sleet in the mix) continue during the nighttime hours. However a second wave develops on the frontal boundary to the south and a steadier snow returns early Friday morning.

This is a little unusual because usually we are one and done with these systems. The upper support is lagging behind the lead system which allows a second wave to develop. From this another couple of inches should fall bringing the average total to around 6 or so. Temperatures Thursday will be in the 20s. We could rise close to 32 Thursday night and probably hold near 30 during the day Friday until the snow exits later in the day. The weekend will be very cold but dry with sunshine for both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s highs will be in the upper 20s to near 30. Sunday’s highs will be in lower 30s.
