winter storm warning

I left my forecast along for Long Island which is basically 2 to 4 inches near the Nassay Queens border rising to 4 to 6 inches as you go east across Suffolk County and 6 to 8 for areas east of Riverhead. There really is much to change my mind in either direction. I decided not to go higher because I don’t think this is a risk for going a widespread 12 inches and if models back off a bit today I still think we will reach these minimums. Besides we are at the point now where it is basically radar and observations and we see what happens. Snow will develop this morning across the island from south to north so it will start snowing around the same time for everyone. I’m thinking between 8am and 10am and it should snow well into this evening. Temperatures are in the low 20s this morning and I think it is likely to stay in the low 20s all day. Snow ratios will probably be around 12-14-1 which should provide a bit of fluff factor.

The National Weather Serivce is more aggressive with their snow amounts for Long Island but given what is going on this morning on the radars, I don’t think these numbers are out of the question.

Once the snow ends this evening it will be windy and bitter cold with lows Sunday morning in the low teens and highs just back into the 20s. I think we could see some snow showers on Sunday as the core of the cold air moves overhead.
