Winter Storm Watch Long Island Saturday Night
Warmer Next Week
Long Island is under a Winter Storm Watch for Saturday night as we watch a developing storm off the Delaware Coast pass by to our south. The very big question for Long Island is the absolutely borderline cold air that we will have. This is a case where 1 degree could mean a slushy coasting or a heavy 6 inch snowfall.
At this point we leaned toward the low end here and we are under the National Weather Service forecast of 4 to 6 inches for Long Island. Our reasoning here is that over the last month in general the rain snow line has set up north and west of the coast. On the other hand those systems were tracking further west. This one is passing by to our south and that could make cold air more important. Weather models are split on the snow/rain line position. The NAM model which has been very good this winter is keeping things cold enough for all snow on Long Island while others bring warm air in just far enough north to put rain into the mix. We are borderline and it could go either way. We will just have to continue monitoring model trends overnight and Saturday and make adjustments in either direction if required.
US SATELLITE
Skies over Long Island are beginning to clear out and temperatures are falling now as they head into the 20s. Clouds will return Saturday and snow develops in the late afternoon and evening. Then we get snow or a mix or both overnight with the snow ending by 4 or 5am. Weather conditions improve after that with sunshine Sunday and highs in the 40s. Next week will be warm as head to 50 on Monday with arriving clouds. A warm front will bring showers Monday night and even warmer air on Tuesday. With some breaks of sun we should head into the 60s!
