WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY LONG ISLAND

WEATHER SERVICE SNOW FORECASTS RAISED 4 TO 6 INCHES

Since we saw 4 snowfalls on Long Island in March and 3 storms that produced 6 inches or more for the first time in 35 years, the fact that Monday is April 2 and we are getting snow should be no shock to any one. Weather models are putting Long Island in that spot again where an upside surprise is possible. Right now my best guess is for a 3 to 6 inch snowfall with lower amounts west as you head toward NYC and higher amounts in the Long Island snow belt which is the area basically north of the LIE from Route 110 to Wading River. The National Weather Service is a touch higher at 4 to 6 which is pretty much the same idea.

SNOW FORECAST MONDAY MORNING 4/2/2018

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY LONG ISLAND WEATHER SERVICE SNOW FORECASTS RAISED 4 TO 6 INCHES

For Long Island nothing much happens until after 5am as snow breaks out overhead and it will snow hard until about 9 or 10 am before this wave pulls out rapidly to the east. As far as accumulations go on paved surfaces vs colder surfaces my guess is that most paved surfaces will be okay after 8-9am as the sun gets higher in the sky. Before that it is anyone’s guess. If it snows hard enough and it may very well do that for the first 4 hours, some roads area likely to get snow covered especially away from warmer urban centers in Nassau County as you get close to the NYC line. In the end once the snow stops it melts pretty fast tomorrow afternoon with leftover clouds giving way to some breaks of sun and highs back into the 40s.

Below are the National Weather Service snow forecast maps for Long Island for Monday morning and for nearby areas in Connecticut and New Jersey in case you are travelling.

NEW YORK CITY AND VICINITY SNOW

At the moment clouds are beginning to move in from the west as the fast moving wave of low pressure moves across the lower Ohio Valley tonight. As far as the radar is concerned there is nothing nearby on any of the radars and it will remain free of any snow until well after midnight in our area at least.

Once the snow ends we will have leftover clouds Monday afternoon with temperatures reaching back into the 40s. Tuesday a chilly rain develops with an onshore wind as the next warm front cold front combination approaches. We could see 60s on Wednesday with the chance for showers and thunderstorms. Colder dry weather finishes off the week but there could be one more snow threat this weekend. We will discuss that further once this system plays through on Monday.
