Bitter Cold Long Island Temperatures
With clear skies over Long Island tonight we are seeing some areas with temperatures down in the single digits. You can thank clear skies, light winds and a deep snow cover for these numbers. The bitter cold temperatures from Islip to Riverhead however won’t last long. Once clouds move in late tonight those temperatures will move quickly back up to the teens to near 20 which is where the temperatures are everywhere else.
The satellite loop shows clouds over the Great Lakes moving east and these clouds will increase and thicken up on Tuesday. Warm air displacing cold air can often cause a burst of snow or rain before the transition to warm air at the ground. However most weather models show any precipitation Tuesday evening going by to our north.
Radars at least at the moment are quiet. Tuesday night when temperatures climb up above 40, we will see some showers into Wednesday morning. Later Wednesday we could break out into some sunshine with highs reaching into the 50s.
Longer term Thursday will be very mild with some showers but then cold air begins to return Friday and we do have a threat for snow or ice later Saturday into Sunday morning.
