Bitter Cold Single Digit Lows Snow Possible Saturday
Bitter Cold Single Digit Lows Snow Possible Saturday
After only making it back to about 25 degrees or so in most places the table is set for a very cold night ahead for Long Island. Lows will drop to 10 or less across much of Suffolk County tonight and near or just above 10 in Nassau. Add the wind to the equation and you have a bitter cold night ahead. Low pressure is developing offshore and it is helping to drag down the bitter cold air from high pressure over the Great Lakes. Skies will be clear tonight and even though we will have plenty of sunshine on Thursday, the thermometer will struggle to get back to 20 degrees for highs.
The satellite loop shows clouds offshore along with some snow on the radar but none of this is coming anywhere close to us.
Thursday night into Friday morning will be another very cold night with lows in the single digits to low teens. Friday we will have sun to start but some clouds will be around. There may be a weak disturbance around in the afternoon that could trigger off some snow showers in scattered places but nothing that will cause an issue.
Saturday a stronger disturbance heads our way from the Great Lakes and with a low just offshore some snow is likely Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. It could be on the order of a coating to a couple of inches before the low moves away. The best chance for more than 2 would be over the Eastern Half of Suffolk County. New Years Eve will be windy and bitter cold with highs only 15 to 20 in spite of some sunshine. We won’t hit bottom until Monday morning with lows 0 to 5 above island wide. Depending on snow cover and wind, below zero temperatures are possible especially in the Pine Barrens. It is a bitter cold start to 2018.
