Drought Breaking Rains Possible Next 6 Days
The first of several rounds of rain are headed our way with clouds rolling into Long Island tonight. After midnight some showers now in Western & Central Pennsylvania will be moving in from west to east and should last into Tuesday morning. This first round of rain won’t amount to much with amounts of around a quarter of an inch forecast though some areas could get a bit more. Sunshine should come back Tuesday afternoon with temperatures 70 to 75.
It is the second round of rain beginning late Wednesday and lasting on and off into Friday that Long Island could do well. Low pressure is going to develop on this cold front that stalls out offshore. Moisture will get thrown back westward and more moisture will come up from the south.
The southeast flow and the big high to the north will create a productive onshore flow so some areas could do quite well with this. Fingers are crossed that we don’t waste this opportunity. More on and off rain will continue into the weekend as low pressure moves very slowly northeastward. It may not get out of the way until Sunday.
The latest GFS remains very bullish on total rainfall for the next 7 days showing 3 inch plus amounts in Nassau with a bit less in Suffolk but it will still be in the range of a couple of inches. Notice the 6 inch plus amounts just to the southwest. It won’t take much to shift it eastward. This is the first time in many months that we might see multiple days of rain over a 7 day period. This will not break the drought but if this pans out, it will go a long way to delivering some genuine drought relief.
We are also watching a strong disturbance in the tropics which is forecast to become a tropical storm in the Eastern Caribbean in a few days. With the upper air pattern that is set up along the east coast, we will need to watch developments carefully which is exactly what JOESTRADAMUS is doing on his latest post.
