Heavy Rain 2 Inches Or More Possible

Later Tuesday Into Wednesday

Let’s hope for Long Island that the NAM model is right. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday as a very slow moving cold front crawls across Long Island. Conditions here have been extremely dry with very little rain falling since the beginning of September. The last 7 days of sunshine and dry air have made conditions even drier so the rain would be most welcome. The NAM model above shows a very generous 2 to 3 inch island wide rainfall out of this weather system and let us hope that this is indeed the case. In addition strong winds will develop on Tuesday from the south 20-30 mph with higher gusts so Gale Warnings are possible for the offshore waters.

Tropical air is beginning to saturate the atmosphere as it lifts up to our west this afternoon. The satellite loop has us on the edge of cloud cover for the rest of the day so there should be at least some sunshine through the afternoon with temperatures in the 70s except right along the immediate coast where the ocean wind will keep it cooler. Then clouds will move in tonight and there could be some light rain or drizzle developing during the early morning hours Tuesday. Radars here should be quiet at least into this evening.

Tuesday there will be some showers but the bulk of this will be Tuesday night into the first half of Wednesday. It might take most of the day for the rain to clear the island from west to east. Temperatures will be into the 70s Tuesday and then once the front passes we will fall into the 60s on Wednesday.

This front is the first of several fronts that will be impacting our weather over the next 10 days. Each front will bring down a cooler air mass behind it. The weather pattern going forward will be more volatile with temperature swings in both directions and opportunities for some rain along the way. Thursday and Friday will be cool and dry with highs just in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Then the next cold front approaches with the chance for rain over the weekend.
