RAIN & STRONG WINDS GALE WARNINGS COASTAL AREAS
We are blowing away across Long Island this morning with strong gusty southerly winds as a very strong cold front approaches. The cold frontal band is exceptionally narrow so for Long Island it could take literally the entire day for rain to move from Western Nassau County to Eastern Suffolk County. Weather models keep going back and forth on the extent of the rain amounts and since they will be dependent on thunderstorm development, there will be some variability from place to place. I still think we get at least an inch or 2 of rain out of all this.
HRRR MODEL RAINFALL FORECAST THROUGH MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY
In the meantime the front as moved into Eastern Pennsylvania with waves of downpours on the radar showing up to the south and lifting northward. Later today some thunderstorms are likely to develop in the mix so if you get into a stronger set of cells the downpours could be quite heavy.
The other problem for Long Island is for tonight into Wednesday morning. If the front slows to a crawl the rain will be slow to end particularly over the East End where it could rain for at least part if not the entire day Wednesday. When it is all said and done rainfall amounts from west to east should be on the order of at least 1 to 2 inches.
As far as winds are concerned, gale warnings and a wind advisory are in effect for today and tonight. Some gusts to 40-50 mph not impossible especially in and around any thunderstorms that develop later today.
…WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM THIS MORNING TO 2 AM
EDT WEDNESDAY…
* Winds…South 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
* Timing…Developing this morning and continuing through the
evening, ending from west to east at night.
* Impacts…Strong winds can blow down limbs, trees, and power
lines. Scattered power outages are expected.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph,
or gusts of 46 to 57 mph, are expected or occurring. Winds this
strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile
vehicles, in open areas, and on elevated roads and bridges. Use
extra caution.
