Chill In The Air Through Next Week
Frost Advisory Eastern Suffolk County Tonight
Clouds, Ocean Winds & Some Rain
The satellite loop this morning tells the story pretty much with regards to Long Island weather over the next week or so. To the northeast in Canada you can see it spinning. The strong polar vortex which really has no business being there now but there it is and more importantly, its not moving anywhere. This means we have a log jam in the atmosphere known is blocking.

GFS MODEL UPPER AIR THIS MORNING
The tighter picture above shows a close up view. Remember that the air aloft travels counter clockwise around lows (vortex) and clockwise around highs (blocking high). So this is carrying air masses from one place to another. Our air here on Long Island is essentially coming from Southeastern Canada. Now with things locked up like this, the next weather system in the Plains can’t move northeast into that upper low so it moves around it. It heads straight east and carries a low to the coast late Thursday into Friday.
LONG ISLAND TEMPERATURES 9AM EDT
You can see for all practical purposes what this pattern is doing today on the radar. We are sunny today on Long Island but the radar shows a band of showers moving west to east across Virginia to the Delmarva Peninsula and touching Southern New Jersey. The cloud line on the satellite loop is not that far away. But we should be partly to mostly sunny today and it is cool with highs in the 50s to near 60.
Tonight looks clear with lows in the 40s though some 30s are possible in cold spots. A FROST ADVISORY is posted for Eastern Suffolk County tonight as the growing season is underway. Then on Thursday we cloud up with light rain or drizzle developing late in the evening. This is not going to be a big rain producer here since the system that is coming out of the Rockies will remain weak. Friday we will see lots of clouds and some leftover rain or drizzle around with highs in the 50s. For more on this and the weekend outlook check out my long range JOESTRADAMUS post from last night.
