It is hard to believe but we have a Long Island deep Marine Layer that extends all the way into Western New Jersey and the Hudson Valley of New York. Temperatures on Long Island in mid afternoon are not out of the 60s which is at least 15 degrees below average! That marine layer is preventing the atmosphere from becoming unstable. This is the reason why the severe weather risk does not extend to Long Island. In fact it may wind up being well to the west in Western New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania where some places at least are heating up close to 80 degrees.

Latest radar loops show a couple of lines of showers and thunderstorms firing up to the west and north but so far it is hard to get worked up over any of this. There is an isolated cell in Southeastern Pennsylvania at the moment. Weather models will begin firing up some thunderstorms during the evening but right now it is hard for me to get worked up over this. So for the rest of the afternoon and early evening, I won’t rule out a passing shower, otherwise it will just remain cloudy and gloomy with highs just in the upper 60s to lower 70s. After 6 or 7pm we will just watch the radars to see what transpires.
Looking at the HRRR model for 10pm this evening you can see the models are focusing on the line in upstate New York. The southern part of that line extends into Northwest New Jersey. Looking at the overall profile it would seem to me that the line will weaken as it comes east. By the time it reaches Long Island it will be just a line of dying showers as it crosses between 10pm and 1am. I’m not expecting much from this.
Sunday I’m going to lean optimistic and go partly sunny with highs back into the lower 80s. Monday should be sunny with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
