Long Island Heavy Rain 1-2 Inches Thursday

If you look carefully at the satellite loop you can see two things. First is the little hole of dry air that developed over us temporarily to allow for some breaks of sun. The second thing is the strong spinning upper low that is rotating in the Middle MIssissippi Valley that is making progress to the east albeit slowly. There are no weather issues this evening with just clouds gradually increasing from south to north. Rain develops during the early morning hours making for a wet morning rush hour commute on Thursday.

Activity on the radar will be increasing to our west this evening and tonight. Heavy rains are likely Thursday morning island wide. Give yourself some extra time for the morning rush hour commute. There could be a break for a bit in the afternoon but as low pressure organizes along the New Jersey coast another round of rain is likely late Thursday into Thursday night. Some local flooding is possible in heavier downpours in the usual suspect locations.

RAINFALL FORECAST THROUGH FRIDAY

long island heavy rain

Rainfall forecasts from the National Weather Service are showing about an inch or so of rain but I’m thinking that it could be more given the strong southeast inflow and the strong upper air system to the west swinging eastward and virtually overhead. Friday we will see leftover clouds and showers. Temperatures on Thursday will probably be in the upper 50s to lower 60s with the ocean wind. Friday we could see 60s to some lower 70s.

Memorial Day Weekend Saturday Best Day

With the first holiday weekend of the summer (unofficial summer) Memorial Day Weekend is usually the holiday weekend where we have the most difficulty with trying to string together 3 nice day in a row. This year the Memorial Day Weekend is going to play to form with issues for later Sunday and again later Monday as the next weather system approaches. This leaves Saturday as the best day of the holiday weekend to do anything outdoors. We should have some sunshine though there will be clouds around. Temperatures will be in the 70s except of course at the shore where there will be an onshore wind and that means temperatures will settle back into the 60s and even some 50s.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND UPPER AIR FORECAST SATURDAY NIGHT

memorial day weekend

The good news is that weather systems will be moving along from west to east once again which means Saturday will be nice with some sun and clouds and the best of the 3 day weekend with most highs in the 70s away from the ocean. The bad news is that weather systems will be moving along again from west to east and another trough drops into the Plains Saturday night and that sets up a frontal system for Sunday and Monday. A warm front sets up for Sunday which will mean some sun early and then increasing clouds and the risk for rain or showers Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Sunday temperatures will struggle a bit with most highs in the 60s to some lower 70s inland. The areas near the ocean will probably be cooler.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SUNDAY EVENING FORECAST

Monday Memorial Day will also see the threat for showers or a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches. Highs will be in the 70s.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND MONDAY EVENING FORECAST

Then of course it is back to work on Tuesday when we could see clouds and some sun and the risk for shower continues with highs in the 70s. The long range looks like cold fronts will be coming through every 2 to 3 days with temperatures close to average for this time of year. There is the chance the odd day could warm up here and there but no prolonged heat is in the forecast for much of next week.

Wednesday JOESTRADAMUS will be on Long Island at the Patchogue Medford Library at 7pm to discuss the upcoming hurricane season. Click here for more information.
