Long Island Rain Forecast 2 to 3 Inches
We are about to see 48 hours worth of rain for Long Island beginning around daybreak Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday night as 2 waves of low pressure move northeastward around a big storm in the Plains and Upper Midwest. For the first time in awhile the Gulf of Mexico will open up with some moisture. The map above shows rainfall through Wednesday evening however there is more rain coming Wednesday night that could add another inch or so of rain. Some thunderstorms are possible as well leaving us the possibility of some locally higher amounts.
LONG ISLAND RAIN FORECAST GFS MODEL
This is a significant rainfall over the 2 day period and brings rain to much of the area that is experiencing severe drought. If we can get that maximum area of 3 to 5 inches to shift a little southward it would be a huge bonus.
For the rest of today we will see sunshine giving way to some arriving clouds during this afternoon as moisture swings northward around the storm center in the Plains. You can see the rotation of that storm on the satellite loop as the circulation is very large.
Radars will remain quiet through the first half of tonight and then start to load up as that rain arrives on Long Island around daybreak and in time for the morning rush hour on Tuesday. There should be a break Tuesday night into part of Wednesday before the second round gets underway by midday Wednesday. Weather conditions will improve on Thursday. We could see temperatures rise into the 60s especially on Wednesday ahead of a strong cold front that will push eastward and offshore.
