Long Island Sees 2 More Storm Systems This Week

Friday Saturday Doom And Gloom

It’s been a day of clouds and showers over Long Island thanks to that arm of moisture that is evident on the satellite view this evening. This arm will be around for a while tonight so while the showers will finally stop sweeping in from off the ocean, we will have some drizzle and fog around. Overnight lows will be mostly in the upper 40s. We could see some breaks develop in the cloud cover toward morning.

Tuesday should be dry dayside and we might even see the sun break the through clouds for a short time. Unfortunately the next weather system from the Ohio Valley will be approaching and to top it off we have another day with a wind from the east and southeast which is not helpful in the temperature department. Between the clouds and the wind, temperatures will probably not get out of the 50s.

Showery rains will develop Tuesday night and continue on Wednesday until a cold front passes late in the day. That should finally put and end to the wind and shift the wind direction to the north. That brings drier air in for Wednesday. While we sit in clouds and showers Wednesday, temperatures will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

If there is one day this week where we can say it will be decent, that day will be Thursday. We should see some sunshine Thursday before clouds arrive later in the day. The wind will behave and the early May sun will take highs up to the mid and upper 60s with the exception of the south and east facing shorelines which will be in the 50s. Then we have the next weather system coming in to finish off the week.

What we know is that low pressure heads east across the lower Ohio Valley and then takes a stand off the Mid Atlantic coast for Friday and Saturday. All the weather models show this. However some models are ore suppressed than others  as they react to the blocking in the North Atlantic. The differences are subtle between the models but they will have an impact on weather here. The European has a more suppressed look which would put us in clouds, gloom and doom with some light rain or drizzle but the heaviest rain and wind would be to the south.

The GFS model this afternoon is a little less suppressed and further north which means the same gloom and doom but with more rain Friday and Saturday. It does seem as if we will get something either way and the fact is that both days will be damp dreary and raw. Once rain arrives temperatures will settle in the 50s and if we get into a steady rain it could be upper 40s and lower 50s. Both models suggest the low will sink southward Saturday night and that could allow for some improvement for Sunday Mother’s Day but we will still have an east wind so it is hard to imagine it clearing out. It’s not impossible but dry air will have to really push south from New England in order to pull that off. For now we will call Mother’s Day cloudy early with perhaps some brightening later in the day. Highs would get into the lower 60s under this scenario. Note that there is uncertainty here when it comes to Sunday.
