Long Island Severe Weather Depends On Wind

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service has expanded its area of “slight risk” for severe weather Sunday to include Nassau and Western Suffolk Counties and places Eastern Suffolk County under a marginal risk of sever weather.

Before we address the severe weather threat for Sunday night, lets look at weather conditions this evening. Right now on Long Island weather conditions are pretty good. We had a good deal of sunshine for much of the day. Even the shore broke out nicely into sunshine. Temperatures are mostly in the 70s except upper 60s east and along the south shore beaches.

Long Island Severe Weather Depends On Wind Radar Loops

Right now on the radar some pop up showers have developed and are moving southeast but they seem to be falling apart when they reach New York City and I would expect that to continue to happen during the evening hours. Later on tonight there are some showers and thunderstorms developing to the south and west ahead of the warm front so we will see how much they expand and how far east they get.

My general feeling for Sunday is that while some rain or showers could move through late tonight into Sunday morning we will catch a break Sunday afternoon as the warm sector sets up. Nothing from the standpoint of severe weather should occur on Long Island until after 6pm..and more than likely after 8pm.

Long Island Severe Weather NAM SUNDAY EVENING 8PM

nam30

The NAM model has a pretty decent line of storms in Eastern Pennsylvania at 8pm so there is really nothing close by. Much of the lead activity to the north. Survival of those storms will hinge on how much of a south wind we have and how much it cools the bottom part of the atmosphere. That ocean wind is a notorious thunderstorm killer.

Long Island Severe Weather Upper Winds Sunday Evening

The upper air dynamics are supportive for some storms to survive the trip across and at 10pm the NAM has a fairly formidable line just to the west though that line is strongest in Southern New Jersey where you see the purple.

severe3 Long Island Severe Weather

Much of the south winds being indicated on the map are 15 knots or less from just offshore to over land. This might not be strong enough to kill the thunderstorms off. We will continue to evaluate the situation. I still believe the strongest storms will be for Western Nassau and points south and west into New Jersey. But we will evaluate the situation during the day Sunday.

Weather conditions will improve later Sunday night and Monday looks like a better day with sun and clouds and highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
