The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island under a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening. We are waiting to see whether the atmosphere heats up this afternoon before the storms arrive. If it doesn’t severe thunderstorms will pass mainly to our south.

The first part of the mystery is solved at least for Long Island as a warm front as pushed heavy downpours through and they continue to move northward. Out to the west we can see in Pennsylvania a large area of rain and a line of developing thunderstorms which is likely to be the one that pushes through here during this evening (after 5pm).

The key will be whether we get into the warm tropical air and break out into some sun for a few hours which would add to the steaminess of the air. Right now it is a close call.
Right now temperatures are in the 60s with humidity levels at 90 percent or higher thanks to the downpours. So we are certainly saturated enough. Now it is just a question of whether we can heat the atmosphere a little. Central and Southern New Jersey will see there temperatures climb up toward or even over 80 in places. But it is not likely to warm like that on Long Island. This is why Long Island remains under a slight risk for severe weather late this afternoon and evening.
