Long Island Snow Forecast Sunday Night

For Long Island the snow forecast is pretty easy. We area talking about a burst of snow that lasts for a few hours and then going over to rain. It is a fairly straight forward forecast. Even if it winds up being more than an inch it all gets washed away by the time the morning commute gets underway on Monday. Below are the National Weather Service snowfall forecast maps which I think are overdone as far as snow is concerned for areas to the north, northwest and northeast. I would be more comfortable with cutting their amounts in half. With temperatures rising above 32 there is no threat for any serious icing issues. Snow should begin during the evening hours on Sunday based on new model runs and change to rain during the early morning hours on Monday and before the start of the rush hour.

Rainfall amounts will be in the half to three quarters of an inch range which will dent the drought a little bit more. Monday temperatures will rise through the 40s to near 50. We will dry out with seasonal temperatures Tuesday. Then much colder air arrives on Wednesday as low pressure develops to the south and east. Some snow with that low could possibly scrape Southern New Jersey and areas to the south briefly as the cold air arrives but it does not look like the wave will have any impact on areas further to the north. After Wednesday very cold air arrives for the end of the week. We may see one day in the Thursday through Saturday stretch where temperatures by day have a tough time breaking the 30 degree mark for the daytime high temperature! Here is my forecast and final call map for Sunday night.
