Long Island Weather Frigid Record Lows Possible Late Week
Long Island Weather Frigid Record Lows Possible Late Week
We are setting up for an arctic air mass to invade the Eastern US beginning on Thursday. Cold air is now building in Northern Canada and the upper air flow will bring the coldest of the cold air over Long Island by Friday morning. We will see lows down in the single digits to low teens. The Islip record is 10 above and that is certainly achievable.
LONG ISLAND WEATHER FRIGID FRIDAY MORNING FORECAST LOWS
Satellite loop tonght shows clouds on either side of Long Island and skies should be mainly clear tonight through some clouds could occasionally appear. Temperatures will head down in the upper 20s to near 30.
Right now radars are quiet however the satellite shows clouds building to the southwest as a wave of low pressure develops in the Tennessee Valley. Some precipitation is likely to get close to Long Island late Tuesday and I am including the possibility of a little light rain or even some wet snow in the mix Tuesday night into early Wednesday.
Once that wave goes by arctic air will start coming in. During Thursday into Thursday night some snow showers and snow squalls are possible as the cold air takes hold. Temperatures will be in the 30s on Wednesday but highs Thursday will only be in the 20s and on Friday highs will only reach the low 20s at best.
Friday night the cold air pulls out as warmer air starts to move up the east coast. Overrunning snow is likely to develop and last into Saturday morning. Some accumulation of snow is likely before it ends as some light rain or drizzle as temperatures rise. Depending on how the cold air exits, it is possible that some freezing precipitation could occur on Saturday for a short time. Then it warms up with rain Saturday night into Sunday morning.
