Long Island Thunderstorms Later Tonight Rain Part of Thursday
Long Island lies outside of the flash flood watch area that is up to the west in Northern New Jersey. Also the cold front to the west won’t bring any showers or thunderstorms this afternoon. A renegade shower or thunderstorm could pop up but the front will arrive tonight well after sunset. Until then we will see sunshine and patchy clouds warm and humid conditions today with highs reaching into the 80s except cooler right at the shore.
SATELLITE
We will keep a watchful eye on the local radar however the regional radar is beginning to pick up on a line of thunderstorms ahead of the cold front in Western Pennsylvania and Western NY. It is still a good 8 hours or more away from here so we should be good through at least 7 to 8pm. The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island under a marginal risk for severe weather tonight but has Long Island outside the 2 to 5% risk of tornadoes.
WEATHER RADAR
Overnight as the front comes through we will see a line of showers and thunderstorms. The front is going to temporarily stall offshore Hurricane Larry southeast of Bermuda is building a ridge to the north of it which is slowing everything down. With this in mind we will likely see a wave of rain late tonight into Thursday afternoon before the front pushes out to the east and weather conditions start to improve later in the day Thursday.
Temperatures will be in just in the upper 60s and lower 70s Thursday thanks to the clouds and lingering rain. Rainfall amounts between the thunderstorms tonight and the rain tomorrow will be on the order of an inch to an inch and a half. The ground is rather saturated north of the LIE where rainfall amounts were triple the amounts on the South Shore from Ida. Local flooding is possible from this and we will keep a close watch on the thunderstorms and the rain for Thursday. Hopefully we get through this unscathed.
Once this passes we will finish this week dry with sunshine Friday. Highs will be into the 70s with low humidity. The weekend will be nice and dry with sunshine for Saturday. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s. Sunday will be warmer and a little more humid with sunshine. Highs reach the upper 70s and lower 80s. The weekend should be free from showers and thunderstorms.
As far as Hurricane Larry is concerned the effects here will be indirect and in the form of rough surf and rip currents over the next several days as Larry passes well to our east. Exercise caution if you are heading to area beaches.
