Long Island Weather Rain & Colder Weekend
We are of course done with the record highs of yesterday and we saw the difference some clouds and an ocean wind can make as today’s temperatures stayed in the 60s to low 70s all day. Now we have some patchy drizzle that has moved in from off the ocean as a warm front comes up from the south. The rain to the west stays well to the west for the time being. Well to the south off the Florida coast is low pressure that is developing. That still has time to become a tropical or subtropical storm as it moves northward. While that system is no direct threat, it may play a role in slowing everything in the atmosphere down a bit. That opens the door to some rain here late Friday night and lasting into Saturday afternoon. Weather models today have been trending in this direction.
Radars are loaded with a lot of rain and thunderstorms to the northwest in upstate NY and Western Pennsylvania. That rain area however is moving north northeast and not coming here. Other than the drizzle or a passing shower we won’t see much through the daytime Friday. Just look for clouds and temperatures in the low to mid 60s tonight. A south wind on Friday should allow temperatures to reach into the 70s.
Saturday as low pressure develops just offshore and to the east, a strong northwest wind will develop. With the tropical system getting absorbed by the non tropical storm developing, it is slowing the upper air feature down. This could mean rain developing here later Friday night and lasting into Saturday afternoon. Rainfall amounts have increased on models and we could see up to an inch of rain if this pans out.
Temperatures Saturday will be much colder too with readings not getting out of the 50s all day and dropping into the 30s and low 40s by Sunday morning.
Sunday will be rather breezy and cool with some sunshine and highs in the 50s. Monday we will see clouds and a few early showers as a reinforcing surge of cold air arrives. Tuesday and Wednesday morning could be cold enough for a freeze, especially Wednesday morning if winds drop off.
