Marine Layer Issues This Weekend On Long Island
Warmer Air Moving Eastward For Saturday
The core of the cold air mass that moved in yesterday is moving out today. That is the nice thing about this time of year. Cold shots move in and out quickly and temperatures moderate back to average with just a bit of sunshine as long as you don’t have a hostile wind direction. The day of transition is Friday as a warm front moves through. Clouds from that warm front are racing across the Great Lakes at the moment and should arrive overnight. Temperatures tonight will NOT be as cold as last night though many areas inland and away from warmer urban centers will be in the 20s, especially in the Suffolk County Pine Barrens. Most lows will be in the low to mid 30s.

Radars are quiet for the time being. During Friday as the front goes by, there could be a shower of rain or even some ice pellets and a wet snowflake or two in the mix particularly north and west of the coast. More than likely, most of you won’t see much of anything. Temperatures will start their climb into the 50s but that may take a good part of the day because of cloud cover.

Saturday is the one day of relative warmth. Notice that highs north and east of New York City are in the 50s to near 60 and that will depend on wind direction and clouds. To the south it will be in the mid to upper 60s and I would not at all be surprised to see some 70 degree highs pop up in Southern New Jersey for example but not on Long Island.

You can see from Sunday’s high temperature forecast map that the back door cold front creates a very chilly problem as many areas will be stuck in the 40s. Along with that will be some rain or drizzle. Backdoor fronts can be difficult to forecast and often drop further south than weather models show. This makes spring time forecasting a huge challenge. We at least can say that Saturday will be the better of the two weekend days.
