Noreaster Threat Long Island Sunday Night Into Tuesday
Long Island has not really seen a serious noreaster threat since 1 year ago with the Blizzard of 2016 but all weather models for the last several days continue to zero in on at least a repeat performance on the anniversay of the blizzard with one big difference. This time it is all rain. In fact it could be quite a bit of rain if the GFS model is correct.
NOREASTER THREAT GFS MODEL RAINFALL FORECAST
The overnight model run of the GFS shows Long Island getting 4 inches or more of rain which would cut the rainfall deficit of over 11 inches at Islip which is a carryover from last year. 4 inches of rain would cut that long term deficit by over 1/3 which is truly a drought denting rain if it happens.
NOREASTER THREAT GFS MODEL WIND FORECAST MONDAY AFTERNOON
The other issue will be the wind which by this model’s forecast would be on the order of 30 to 40 knots with gusts to 50 or higher which is significant. The strongest winds will be later Sunday night into Monday night if the model verifies.
There are no weather issues to deal with today as we should finally see some sunshine and mild temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Skies will be clear tonight and Friday we will start with some sunshine before clouds arrive ahead of the next system (not the Noreaster) which will bring some rain Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Saturday will be cloudy after this weak system goes by. Weather conditions will begin to deteriorate late Sunday with rain moving in late in the day or Sunday evening with the worst conditions later Sunday night into Monday night. The noreaster will start to move away on Tuesday though we still could see some leftover rain around.
