Rain Continues Overnight From 50s to 80s
We continue to see rain over Long Island this evening and the rain will continue overnight but it should be all done by daybreak as low pressure moves away from Long Island and heads for the Gulf of Maine. It has been an utterly miserable day for mid May as temperatures were in the upper 40s and lower 50s all day long and they are in the mid to upper 40s for the overnight. Winds have been a little gusty at times especially along the shore but from the standards of a noreaster, it has been relatively well behaved. Some minor coastal flooding continues to be the main risk at high tides for the south shore of Nassau and Western Suffolk.
Radars right now show Long Island in moderate rain. Rainfall amounts so far from Central Suffolk County westward are approaching or exceeding an inch and we will add to those totals though they will fall short of the 2 to 3 inches forecast. Much of the heaviest rain was either west and south of us or north and east of us. Apparently a bit of a gap developed right in the middle. Models do show another 1/2 to 3/4 inches of rain overnight before it ends.
Sunday we should see improvement though there will be clouds, a gusty northwest wind that will develop and temperatures that should get back into the 60s. However there still could be some passing showers during the late afternoon and evening. Monday will be windy with some sunshine as highs make a run for 70. Later next week a warm up is coming and it may come with a west wind. This will keep the sea breeze in check and that gives Long Island a chance to reach the 70s to near 80 Wednesday and into the 80s on Thursday.
