Rainfall for Long Island Friday
Rainfall for Long Island Friday
When it comes to rainfall, Long Island which usually gets its fair share continues to suffer very dry conditions especially in Suffolk County. There has not been an island wide rainfall in weeks. Thunderstorms have been lacking in Suffolk County. Nassau County has done a bit better recently but 2 inches of rain in 15 minutes from a thunderstorm doesn’t do much good. We need an island wide soaking rain and we may finally be seeing one late Thursday night and Friday.
Right now the forecast from the National Weather Service shown above is for about 3/4 of an inch to fall island wide which is better than nothing. Models however are much more bullish showing 1 to 2 inches of rain and some showing even more than that. Given that we are in a drought pattern, it would seem to me that the safe forecast is to go lower than what models are showing.
Latest SREF model precipitation shows an average of 1.43 inches of rain for Islip. The SREF is compilation of models each with different parameters. It is a useful tool but not always a good one to use. The range is from as little as half an inch to as much as 4 inches of rain. I think we will keep our fingers crossed that the main band of rain will settle over Long Island and give us a solid rainfall. Nothing of consequence begins until later Thursday night and lasts until Friday evening.
Now for Thursday it will be the last hot day with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. We will have a mix of sun and clouds and it will become very humid. I don’t think there will be a pop up thunderstorm during the day Thursday. Rain arrives after midnight Thursday night and continues on and off until late in the day Friday.
As far as the weekend goes. Saturday should be dry. We could have another shot of rain or showers coming in during Sunday.
