The bar wasn’t exactly very high but we did set a record at Islip today at 77. The old record was 76 set in 1996 but remember that the data set is very small. Newark’s record for today was 90 which was set back in 1938. Islip’s records don’t go that far back. More record highs are likely for Tuesday with the record high from 2006 at 74. This should be easy to crack and we will probably do it by 10am Tuesday.

We do have a few clouds moving through this evening as we transition over into a warmer air mass. The issue with temperatures on Long Island over the next 2 days will be the wind direction. As long as the wind is not coming off the ocean, 70s should be doable. Areas in Northern Nassau & Northwestern Suffolk County will probably reach the 80s Tuesday and Wednesday. The East End will probably sit in the low to mid 70s no matter what thanks to the 65 degree or less ocean temperature.

Radars are quiet and will remain so into Thursday. We will be seeing a cold front approaching on Friday and the question is whether a wave will develop on it. Also there is the probability of a tropical storm developing east of the Bahamas and moving up the coast but passing offshore.

record highs

At the moment it would seem that there would not be much rain with this given that the energy may come too late for areas to catch the intensification. Also the tropical storm will ride up the coast ahead of the cold front and would be kept offshore and eventually absorbed by the low developing to the north. We would need to see a slower deeper system further west for it to have some impact as far as rain goes. We will monitor this and also wait for the latest update from the National Hurricane Center at 8pm.

The long range pattern looks to turn colder over the weekend and next week. Joestradamus has more on this from his latest post on the European model.
