Record Highs Severe Weather Possible Wednesday
For Long Island record highs are always tough to do because of the effect of the cold ocean. Everything has to be just right at the bottom of the atmosphere has to be just about perfect to take temperatures up. We will have such a set up on Wednesday at least for awhile. Saturday’s record highs were achieved early before the marine layer came in during Saturday afternoon taking temperatures from the mid 60s down to the low 50s. This marine layer served as the mechanism to kill off the severe weather that pounded Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey. Wednesday we have a similar setup but there is going to be a slight difference that may mean for higher temperatures and it may also mean that severe thunderstorms should they develop to the west, will survive to some degree.
The weather models all show more of a southwest wind on Wednesday verses a southeast wind. This will probably mean that Nassau and Northwestern Suffolk County stand a good chance of seeing temperatures break the 70 degree mark. Clouds may be a factor but I think the odds are good. For Central and Eastern Suffolk the southwest wind comes over a large stretch of open ocean so 70 degree temperatures there are not likely to occur. The limited marine layer could keep thunderstorms alive as they move east across New Jersey and NYC late Wednesday. The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service has Nassau County at a marginal risk of severe weather at the moment for Wednesday.
Tonight on the satellite loop clouds are moving up from the south as the warming of the atmosphere begins. Radars are showing some rain aloft to the west and south but little of that is reaching the ground. Other than clouds I don’t expect much to happen tonight.
Tuesday we will see clouds with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s and there is the chance for a passing downpour. More downpours are possible Tuesday night before the super warm air arrives on Wednesday. Much of Wednesday will be rain free until the late afternoon and evening when thunderstorms are a risk. We will zero in on the risk for severe weather on Tuesday in more specific terms.
