The satellite loop shows the next disturbance dropping southeastward across the Great Lakes and we can also see yesterday’s storm up and Eastern Canada. The proximity of the storm in Canada prevents this system from become a real trouble maker however sometimes these things can produce small surprises and Long Island will be in position for such a surprise if precipitation from a wave developing just to our south juices up in a hurry. Right now we are thinking that a 1 to 2 inch powdery snow will fall with snow developing after midnight and lasting until about 8 or 9am in most places. Suffolk County is probably at the greater risk for a slight upside surprise as it will snow longer there by an extra hour or two.

Snow is coming into range on the regional radar in Western Pennsylvania and it will be gradually spreading eastward overnight. There are no issues through this evening. Snow should develop around or after midnight and then done by 8 or 9am Thursday. With temperatures in the 20s through all of this it will stick. Snowfalls like this can often cause more travel headaches than a bigger storm since everyone seems to think that their cars can’t skid out of control on an inch of snow and ice.

Sunshine returns Thursday afternoon with temperatures reaching the 30s and then a shot of cold air Thursday night will send thermometers down to the low to mid teens making this the coldest night of the season so far. Friday another disturbance will produce lots of clouds but temperatures won’t get out of the 20s. We don’t expect snow from this as the system winds up developing well offshore. Saturday and Sunday look nice and sunny but cold with highs in the 30s.
