Winter Storm Warning Suffolk Winter Weather Advisory Nassau
Winter Storm Warning Suffolk Winter Weather Advisory Nassau
Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Suffolk County with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Nassau County. The good news is that the storm track should be far enough east to spare us the 1 foot plus snows island wide. Those heavy snows will occur just to our east. Only a slight shift would put Long Island particularly Suffolk County into the heavier snow but for now we remain confident in our forecast amounts above. Eastern Long Island should see the highest from 8 to 12 inches from Riverhead east while Nassau County to the Suffolk line should see 4 inches or less.
US SATELLITE
Satellite and radar show the developing coastal low off the North Carolina coast. Rain is breaking out across Virginia with snow back to the west in the mountains as well as in the mountains of North Carolina. Local radars should begin to pick up developing snow and rain going into the evening hours. Clouds have been increasing rapidly this afternoon and they will thicken up in short order.
Snow should break out later this evening and the heaviest snow will fall overnight into the morning hours Tuesday so it will accumulate on all surfaces until after sunrise. By mid morning additional accumulations will decrease as the storm begins to pull away to the northeast. Winds will strengthen from the northeast and then northwest on Tuesday with gusts to 40 mph at times along coastal areas. We are not expecting much in the way of coastal flooding since the storm develops and moves through with only 1 tide cycle at risk and tides are at the low end of the tide cycle. Weather conditions should improve later Tuesday afternoon as the snow ends and we deal with leftover clouds. Cold weather with sunshine should be back on Wednesday.
